First Foods - The Mallu Way!

As I mentioned here initially I started Issac on traditional foods that is given to all babies in our culture.  Here is a list of first foods that I used to offer my little one when we first started solids while we were back home in Kerala...

Raagi Porridge: You will get raagi powder at any of the Medical stores in Kerala or Indian shops abroad. Add cold water to the raagi powder and mix well until all lumps are dissolved. Then heat this mixture on medium heat until the mixture is thick, dark in colour and starts bubbling (about 3- 5mins). Keep stirring otherwise there will be lumps. Mix 2 scoops of infant formula to this mixture. To sweeten you can add brown sugar or jaggery but this is optional.

Raw Plantain Powder Porridge: Mix the plantain powder with cold water until all lumps are dissolved. Then heat this mixture on medium heat until the mixture is thick and starts bubbling. Keep stirring to avoid any lumps. Mix 2 scoops of infant formula to this mixture. To sweeten you can add brown sugar or jaggery but this is optional.

Fruit Puree: You can also offer your baby a variety of fruits like apples, pears, dried apricots and prunes (good for constipation). Just cook these in water and using a hand blender puree the fruit mixture. Reduce the mixture until you get the desired consistency.

Vegetable Puree: Cook vegetables like carrot, pumpkin, potato, sweet potato, peas with a little water and blend the mixture to a smooth paste with a hand blender. You can add any pulses like moong dal, green gram dal cooker in pressure cooker with the vegetable mixture, to make it a more wholesome meal.
